Things to Know About Stowe:
Stowe, VT's biggest industry is tourism, with
one of the biggest draws being the Stowe Mountain
Resort for skiing during winter and hiking during
the warmer months, and even more notably, the Trapp
Family Lodge. The musical von Trapp family was the
inspiration behind The Sound of Music and the original
lodge was opened in 1950 after the family fled Austria
and settled in Vermont. That lodge fell victim to
a fire in 1980 but a new, bigger lodge was opened
in 1983 and is the one in operation today by Johannes
von Trapp. The lodge boasts a mountain biking trail,
several cross-country skiing trails, a gym, tennis
courts and for those in a festive mood - sleigh rides.
The meadow of the lodge is also one of the main sites
for the popular Vermont Mozart Festival, an annual
series of concerts that travel throughout Vermont.
