information:
Sioux Falls, SD - Then and Now:
Sioux Falls was thusly named for the falls located
here; created about 14,000 years ago during the last
ice age. Several Native American tribes made their
homes on this land, together forming a successful
agricultural society until 1856, when conflict arose
and the land was evacuated. In 1865, a military reservation
named Fort Dakota was established and slowly but surely,
settlers of all creeds began to return to Sioux Falls.
From this point on the population continued to grow,
allowing for the construction of railroads, a military
airbase, interstate highways, the resurgence of the
previous agricultural industry and the incorporation
of the town itself.
Today, Sioux Falls enjoys a healthy economy, centered
mostly on health care, finance and retail, with four
major hospitals and financial service company headquarters
located here including Citigroup, Great Western Bank,
HSBC and Wells Fargo. This major influx of corporations
paved the way for the arts and cultural programs that
Sioux Falls now hosts. From poetry and literary events
to the annual downtown Sculpture Walk to the Sioux
Falls JazzFest, the people of Sioux Falls continue
to strengthen the presence of the arts through dedicated
cultural organizations.
