Putting Parkersburg, West Virginia On The Map
Parkersburg experienced a major economic boom
during the Civil War era with the birth of the oil
and gas industry-founded quite serendipitously. In
1859, the Rathbone brothers purchased some land in
the hopes of finding salt, a large industry at the
time. What they found instead was petroleum. Seizing
the opportunity, the brothers created one of the first
producing oil wells and shipped barrels upon barrels
across the country. Parkersburg Rig & Reel Company
was soon formed, supplying oil field equipment to
petroleum-making centers across the globe. The wealth
of the oil barons helped to build the town as well
as the state. Today, Parkersburg pays tribute to this
history of "black gold" with its well-known
Oil and Gas Museum.
Oil wasn't the only staple to come out of Parkersburg.
The first bar of "floating soap" was developed
by Upson Oils & Soap and later sold by Proctor
& Gamble as "Ivory". Parkersburg was
also home to the Ames Company (no longer in operation),
the largest shovel plant in the world and maker of
the shovels "That Built America" used to
dig trenches at Bunker Hill. And you have "The
Man Who Made Stamps Stick", chemist Victor G.
Bloede to thank for developing the lickable glue backing
on government stamps.
