A Bit of Lawton, OK History
Lawton prides itself in being a military community,
home to the National Historic Landmark Fort Sill,
a still-active US Army post and also the gravesite
of Geronimo. The town of Lawton had a modest start,
primarily being open prairie south of Fort Sill. In
the late 1800s, lots of land were auctioned off to
the highest bidder who then chose their platt based
on a lottery drawing. (The home of Mattie Beal, the
second name to be drawn in the lottery, was recently
restored and is now part of the National Register
of Historic Places.) The population influx at that
time however, came before such amenities as sidewalks,
utilities and schools, and growth stalled as each
of these issues were addressed. By the mid 1900s,
population growth was once again on the rise, attributed
to the establishment of the Field Artillery School
at Fort Sill and the strong bond they have with the
community.
