East Providence RI, Then and Now:
East Providence took a bit of time to establish
its place in New England. Initially belonging to the
Native Americans, the first land purchased by the
Plymouth Colony only included the northern half of
what is now East Providence. Soon after, the rest
of the land was purchased and settled, with the western
half considered to be part of Massachusetts. It wasn't
until 1862 that this piece was ceded to Rhode Island
and the land as a whole was incorporated as East Providence.
Today there are several neighborhoods that comprise
East Providence, each with their own brand of charm:

settlement (known at that time as Rehoboth), now a
