As the holidays approach, thoughts turn to parties and get togethers and the inevitable realization, “I don’t have anything to wear!” Rather than rushing to the mall and handing over the credit cards, try a few money saving alternatives.
Before you begin, do a little research, either online or browse thro
ugh fashion magazines at your local library. Check out the trends, see what appeals to you, and take a few notes.
Next, armed with your notes, go shopping in your closet. Check and see if you have one or more items that with the addition of a new accessory or two could achieve that “right off the runway” look. Could you easily alter anything to make it more current by changing the hemline or adding, new buttons or trim? Wear a belt or piece of ribbon around your waist to update a less form fitting dress, or a cardigan and skirt combo.
Whether closet shopping was a success or not, make your next stop a consignment shop or Goodwill. Before raising your eyebrows at this suggestion, think of all the money you’ve spent on brand new clothing only never to wear it, ruin with a stain, or have it go quickly out of style. Buying second hand clothing at a fraction of the cost enables you to add more interesting pieces to your wardrobe. Also, when you shop this way, you can stumble across both classic and trendy pieces that did not start off at the mall. Chances are you won’t run into a friend wearing the same outfit!
Be aware that most items purchased second hand cannot be returned, so take the time to try it on. Challenge your friends to save money with you and have a fashion show to see who had the best luck and saved the most.

I try to shop my closet a lot. But it is tough for me because I like to update my wardrobe pretty often.
But it is expensive. This year we are invited to a Bad Xmas Sweater party. We are definitely going to hit some local thrift stores to find a sweater. A bad Xmas sweater. Who wants to spend a lot of money on something like this?
I bet you’ll have no problem finding something suitably hideous for that party at a thrift shop!
